Press release- 16th March 2016 – The international medical humanitarian organisation Doctors of the World has been working with migrants for nearly 40 years. Whether in the migrants’ countries of origin, during their migration or in their host countries, we are seeing the flouting of international humanitarian law and the right to asylum on a daily basis. In the context of this unprecedented humanitarian crisis, the European Union is proposing an agreement with Turkey which totally contradicts its duty to protect—namely, the authorities would no longer respect the principle of non-refoulement of asylum seekers, a principle which they are, in fact, legally bound to respect.
